BRAZILIAN JAZZ SYPHONIC
The Orquestra Brasil Jazz Sinfônica was created in 1989 aiming of keeping alive the tradition of radio and TV orchestras.
Its formation unites the instrumental groups that make up a symphony orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion) to those that make up a jazz Big Band (saxophones, bass, drums, piano and popular percussion), allowing the orchestra extreme flexibility and a wide spectrum of performance and artistic expression.
In these 30 years, the orchestra has been fulfilling and expanding its mission, offering its services
with excellence to the population.
Currently the orchestra is managed by Fundação Padre Anchieta/TV Cultura and integrates its main schedule of attractions with the “Brasil Jazz Sinfônica” program.
MISSION, VISION AND VALUES
The result of a concern with national memory, Brasil Jazz Sinfônica, due to its own artistic relevance, achievements and role in the Brazilian cultural scene, expanded the scope of its mission, which today points to three fundamental axes and covers: past, present and future.
HISTORY BRAZILIAN JAZZ SYPHONIC
The orchestra was born out of a concern of MPB artists and scholars with the preservation of Brazilian popular symphonic music, formation of vibrant expression in the Golden Age of radio and, later, on TV.
The idea, which was already circulating among personalities like Zuza Homem de Mello, took shape in the hands of musicians Arrigo Barnabé and Eduardo Gudin, who shaped the proposal of its creation and presented it to the then secretary of culture, Fernando Morais, who, with enthusiasm, put it into practice. Thus, in 1989, the orchestra became an official entity of the State of São Paulo.
To make up the team and carry out the purposes of this project, artists who played central roles in the orchestral scene of MPB were invited to share this construction, acting as conductors of radio, television or concert and recording orchestras and who, together, generated the creation of the concept and the initial repertoire of the orchestra.
The first conductors of the orchestra were Cyro Pereira, Luís Arruda Paes, Amilson Godoy and Nelson Ayres. The conductors and arrangers Edmundo Villani Côrtes, Chiquinho de Moraes, Portinho and Severino Filho were also invited to collaborate.
After the constitution of the first team of managers, conductors and arrangers, it was needed the main thing – those who would give life to the idea, those who embody the cold notes of the paper, those who make the sound: the musicians.
Artists of recognized excellence were then invited to join the orchestra as section principal, exponents in their areas of expertise, from the popular and erudite universe, and who performed the musicians’ tests in order to complete the orchestra.

Thus began to form the broth of culture and knowledge exchange, which is one of the pillars of excellence presented by Brasil Jazz Sinfônica.
It is characteristic of long-term cultural work, where the construction of the new takes place based on tradition, reconstruction, re-reading and the mixture of influences. Culture takes place on a daily basis and over the centuries, and is, above all, a process and not a timely event.
Throughout these 30 years, artists from the most varied backgrounds, experiences and age groups carry out daily exchanges of an artistic and human nature, enriching and promoting the artistic and intellectual maturation of Brasil Jazz Sinfônica, forming what is commonly called in the corporate world “company culture”, and what makes it, in fact, unique.
Debut Concert
Under the artistic direction of Eduardo Gudin and conducted by Cyro Pereira and Amilson Godoy, the orchestra performed its debut concert on June 8, 1990, at Memorial da América Latina.
It soon showed what it came for, starting its series of striking and historic partnerships, such as the concert held on August 15, 1990 at Memorial da América Latina, which had as its honor guest the genius Tom Jobim, emblematic composer of our musicality and Brazilianness aclaimed worldwide. The arrangements were made by Cyro Pereira, Klaus Ogermann and Paulo Jobim.
Since then, great artists already performed in partnership with Brasil Jazz Sinfônica, such as, among many others: Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, John McLaughin, Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Paulinho da Viola, Stanley Jordan, Lenine, Raul de Souza, John have acted Pizzarelli, Moraes Moreira, Carlos Lyra, Nana Caymmi, Zizi Possi, Dori Caymmi, Danilo Caymmi, Caymmi Family, Paquito de Rivera, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, João Donato, Ed Motta, Cássia Eller, Daniela Mercury, Jane Monheit, Richard Galliano, Luís Melodia, Philip Catherine, Eumir Deodato, Miúcha, Toquinho, Arturo Sandoval, Joe Zawinul, Fabiana Cozza, Mart’nália, Marcos Valle, Daniela Mercury, Carla Cook, Didi Bridgewater, Guinga, Ná Ozzetti, Leila Pinheiro, Elza Soares.
